The Sphinx in the City

“The Sphinx in the City. Urban Life, the Control of Disorder, and Women” written by Elizabeth Wilson, Professor of Social Studies at the Polytechnic of North London, focus on the relation of women and cities not from a negative perspective – the city as a place of fear – but from the perspective of emancipation.
Her study, using fiction, essays, film, and art, as well as history and sociology and looking at metropoles like London, Paris, Moscowa and New York, shows that urban spaces offer especially for women the possibilty to negoiate tradional gender roles and restrictions like for ex. in sexuality.
