Del LaGrace Volcano

Del LaGrace Volcano, born 1957 as Debra Dianne Wood in California, studied photography at San Francisco Art Institute, USA and at the University of Derby, England. First she became well-known with her photography focusing on lesbian sexuality and body representation. Later she changed her identity from lesbian, hermaphrodyke over transman to intersex personality. Parallel to her identity shifts, her/his photography changed it’s themes, portaying for example drag kings and transgender persons. By including the own personality and identity, seen or unseen, and by breaking the voyeuristic view within her/his photographic images, Del LaGrace Volcano developed a specific queer gaze.

As a gender variant visual artist I access ‘technologies of gender’ in order to amplify rather than erase the hermaphroditic traces of my body. I name myself. A gender abolitionist. A part time gender terrorist. An intentional mutation and intersex by design, (as opposed to diagnosis), in order to distinguish my journey from the thousands of intersex individuals who have had their ‘ambiguous’ bodies mutilated and disfigured in a misguided attempt at ‘normalization’. I believe in crossing the line as many times as it takes to build a bridge we can all walk across.
